What is a Gold Bullion? | The Troy Ounce Posted: 22 Jul 2014 06:58 AM PDT What is a Gold Bullion? Everyone wants to invest in gold. Why? Because gold hardly ever disappoints – an investment in gold will always return a profit. However, as you may have already learnt, only shrewd entrepreneurs make the biggest profits in the gold business. Gold trade isn't just about acquiring the products or being the best haggler. If you want to be successful with investment in gold, you MUST first fully understand the products in and the language of the market. The term "gold bullion" is quite a common one in the gold market. So, what is gold bullion and how can you trade profitably in gold bullion? Gold bullion"Bullion" comes from the French word Bouillon which means "boiling." A Bouillon also means a mint or melting house in French. Gold bullion refers to the precious form of the metal from which gold coins are made. Gold bullion is available as ingots, bars, and coins. You can get the bullion from banks and major dealers. The value of gold bullion is measured by purity and weight rather than aesthetics or any other secondary factors. Apart from gold bullions, there are also silver and platinum bullions often used to make silver and platinum bullion coins respectively. Gold bullion bars or coins? Which are better for investment?Gold bullion coins are minted from very high quality gold and brought into the market purely for investment purposes – NOT circulation. You can get them from major coin dealers, precious metal dealers, and brokerage firms. Some bullion coins are made from as much as 99.9% pure gold. Prices of gold bullion coins fluctuate depending on prices of gold in the market. Four of the world's best known bullion coins are;
If you're serious about investing in gold bullion, coins represent a very good option, particularly the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Gold Eagle. The Canadian Maple Leaf if considered the official bullion of Canada. The coins are produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and are some of the purest gold coins you can get your hands on. They have a gold content of between .9999 and .99999 millesimal fineness – equivalent to 24 carats. So virtually, these coins DO NOT contain any base metals at all – it's nothing but pure gold from the Canadian gold mines. The Canadian Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1979. Under the Currency Act, they can be legally tendered in Canada for their face values. However, the Mint Act categorizes them as non-circulating. Traditionally referred to as Crown Gold, the American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion in the U.S. It was first released in 1986 and is authorized by the Gold Bullion Act 1985. Unlike the Canadian Maple Leaf, these coins are made from 22kt (.9167) gold and not 24 carat gold. Being that they are usually already in usable form and much lighter, coin bullions are more attractive compared to bar bullions. If you're looking to purchase bullions in bulk, bars may be your best solution mainly because of their ease of storage. However, bars come with a major drawback in that they are very difficult to liquidate so you'll have to wait a bit longer compared to if you were liquidating coin bullions.
