Bear with milk can stuck on head freed by grapple

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 04:21 PM PDT

A Wisconsin lumberjack driving a forwarder moved in on a black bear which had a milk cartoon stuck on its head and couldn't get it off.

The trucks's grapple came in handy.

Trucks modified to spew exhaust, make political statement

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 03:38 PM PDT

Some large vehicle owners eager to make a political statement about all things green are pushing more smoke out of their engines.

David Weigel at Slate covers the rise of the protest movement. Diesel engines can be modified to force more fuel through the engine, which emits more black smoke. It is an old practice done for fun and aesthetics, but Weigel tracks how the practice came to represent a political statement and a meme: #rollingcoal.

"Rolling coal" is not new. It grew out of the modifications people would do on their vehicles for truck pulls. It's just only recently entered the online culture wars. I'd seen the memes and a couple of the trucks. But I hadn't seen the left reply until this month, when Vocativ ran an expose of "pollution porn for dudes with pickup trucks." Progressives reacted with disbelief to Facebook communities like "Rollin' COAL" and (naturally) "Prius Repellent," and to the sheer number of Instagram and Tumblr entries that recorded this stuff.

Sandstorm Gold not ruling out acquisitions, CEO says

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 02:33 PM PDT

One of the youngest and most dynamic executives in the mining industry today is Nolan Watson, 34, founder and CEO of Sandstorm Gold (TSX:SSL, NYSE: SAND), a publicly traded streaming company with an approximate $860 million market capitalization.

Earlier this week Sandstorm added Marry Little to its board of directors. Ms. Little is the founder of Mirasol Resources, a highly successful explorer focused on Latin America.

Watson explained the rationale for adding a new board member to its team by phone earlier today.

"Mary is a truly nice person and that doesn't come very often with someone with exceptional skill, like she has," he said.

Watson explained that Sandstorm has strengthened its board and recently acquired its sister company, Sandstorm Metals and Energy, because the firm is taking very seriously its next phase of growth.

The six year old company has already grown from nothing to nearly a billion dollars in market capitalization, but Watson has always envisioned building Sandstorm into a mega-market cap publicly traded natural resources financier.

"Our goal is to make project banks obsolete," Watson told me, also commenting that Sandstorm will be more competitive and creative in dealmaking in the future.

He said his firm provides a "holistic one stop solution to mining companies. Friendly capital, at reasonable to lower cost."

Sandstorm may pursue outright acquisitions of more companies in the current depressed resource environment, Watson said.

"We obviously want to continue to do streams and royalties as in the past but now it's about finding good assets and finding a way to get deals done and we would even consider buying out entire companies and financing the assets into production with a stream and building the right team and spinning it out again," Watson said.

"Our focus is now on good assets and finding a way to add value and get streams and royalties on those assets."

US rail traffic hits traffic highs thanks to commodities

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 02:15 PM PDT

Last week's June rail traffic is up 3.6% from one year ago thanks to shipments of more petroleum, metal and stone, says the Association of American Railroads.

Table from AAR

The AAR broken down the top movers this past week:

Seventeen of the 20 commodity categories tracked by the AAR each month saw year-over-year carload increases in June, the same as May. Commodities with the biggest carload increases in June 2014 over June 2013 included crushed stone, sand and gravel, up 12,217 carloads, or 14.1 percent; grain, up 10,394 carloads, or 16.5 percent; petroleum and petroleum products, up 4,736 carloads, or 8.6 percent; motor vehicles and parts, up 4,214 carloads, or 6.2 percent; and, primary metal products, up 2,753 carloads, or 6.6 percent.

Year to date traffic in the US is 4.5% higher compared with 2013.

Canadian and Mexican traffic didn't show the same gains. Total Canadian rail traffic year to date is just 2.4% higher and Mexican traffic is 2.2% higher over the same period.

Year to date primary metals are still down 1.2%.

Coal is up: 4.3% this week and 1.1% year to date.
