Reduce operator fatigue and distraction Posted: 06 Jul 2014 10:01 PM PDT In May of 2013, Caterpillar and Seeing Machines entered into a global alliance to promote and distribute the Driver Safety System (DSS) through Caterpillar's global dealer network.
The Driver Safety System has over 2,500 units working in the field today providing customers with an innovative solution to manage and mitigate operator distraction and fatigue. Caterpillar and Cat Dealers are supporting industry safety by providing the DSS and Cat MineStarTMDetect to raise employees' awareness of risks in, on and around heavy equipment. As heavy equipment is being used more and more in 24/7 shift work industries, customers are actively looking for additional technology solutions. Since Cat's Driver Safety System was installed in its first haul truck five years ago, the system has already captured nearly 2 million fatigue and distraction events. The Driver Safety System is unique because it identifies fatigue and distraction as simple, observable events which are easily communicated and understood by drivers. Several Cat dealers have already become exclusive DSS sales and service providers for their customers beginning with Wagner Equipment, and followed by MATCO, GECOLSA, and most recently WesTrac in Australia. Jaime Sanders, Executive General Manager at WesTrac said of their recent alliance, "WesTrac is very excited about our alliance with Seeing Machines. Through the alliance, WesTrac will make a real difference in enabling our customers' fatigue management efforts. WesTrac now brings customers the industry leading fatigue management product along with Caterpillar's superior Object Detection technologies to offer our customers a step change in safe off-highway truck operations." More Cat dealers are coming on board every month to deliver this comprehensive distraction and fatigue technology for customers. Customers interested in the DSS should contact their local dealer for more information. Trucks modified to spew exhaust, make political statement Posted: 06 Jul 2014 03:38 PM PDT Some large vehicle owners eager to make a political statement about all things green are pushing more smoke out of their engines. David Weigel at Slate covers the rise of the protest movement. Diesel engines can be modified to force more fuel through the engine, which emits more black smoke. It is an old practice done for fun and aesthetics, but Weigel tracks how the practice came to represent a political statement and a meme: #rollingcoal.

Sandstorm Gold not ruling out acquisitions, CEO says Posted: 06 Jul 2014 02:33 PM PDT One of the youngest and most dynamic executives in the mining industry today is Nolan Watson, 34, founder and CEO of Sandstorm Gold (TSX:SSL, NYSE: SAND), a publicly traded streaming company with an approximate $860 million market capitalization. Earlier this week Sandstorm added Marry Little to its board of directors. Ms. Little is the founder of Mirasol Resources, a highly successful explorer focused on Latin America. Watson explained the rationale for adding a new board member to its team by phone earlier today. "Mary is a truly nice person and that doesn't come very often with someone with exceptional skill, like she has," he said. Watson explained that Sandstorm has strengthened its board and recently acquired its sister company, Sandstorm Metals and Energy, because the firm is taking very seriously its next phase of growth. The six year old company has already grown from nothing to nearly a billion dollars in market capitalization, but Watson has always envisioned building Sandstorm into a mega-market cap publicly traded natural resources financier. "Our goal is to make project banks obsolete," Watson told me, also commenting that Sandstorm will be more competitive and creative in dealmaking in the future. He said his firm provides a "holistic one stop solution to mining companies. Friendly capital, at reasonable to lower cost." Sandstorm may pursue outright acquisitions of more companies in the current depressed resource environment, Watson said. "We obviously want to continue to do streams and royalties as in the past but now it's about finding good assets and finding a way to get deals done and we would even consider buying out entire companies and financing the assets into production with a stream and building the right team and spinning it out again," Watson said. "Our focus is now on good assets and finding a way to add value and get streams and royalties on those assets." More: Sandstorm Gold, and a terrific interview Nolan and I filmed back in 2012 |
US rail traffic hits traffic highs thanks to commodities Posted: 06 Jul 2014 02:15 PM PDT Last week's June rail traffic is up 3.6% from one year ago thanks to shipments of more petroleum, metal and stone, says the Association of American Railroads. The AAR broken down the top movers this past week:
Year to date traffic in the US is 4.5% higher compared with 2013. Canadian and Mexican traffic didn't show the same gains. Total Canadian rail traffic year to date is just 2.4% higher and Mexican traffic is 2.2% higher over the same period. Year to date primary metals are still down 1.2%. Coal is up: 4.3% this week and 1.1% year to date. Hat tip, Business Insider. Image of railroad by Cliff |
