LONDON (Commodity Online): Gold has received a safe-haven boost on Russia-Ukraine tensions after falling below $1300 per ounce on dollar strength and weaker yields as measured by US 10 year Treasuries.

Barclays said in a weekly report that "while much of Gold's near-term price performance will depend on how the situation unfolds, the longer-term macro, investor, and physical demnad trends remain in tact and we think the goldl will eventually realise downside risks."

Gold exchange traded funds outflow have largely been stemmed thus far this year and although they may have lent support to prices, this may ot be sustain on bounce between outflows and infows. Net speculative positioning in COMEX Gold has continued to rise in recent weeks with last week capping off a more than one-month streak of increasing net speculative positioning.

"In summary, investor demand has been strong lately, but we would cautioin against interpreting this as a longer-term change in investor sentiment," Barclays said.

In the physical market, gold smuggling continues in India, as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has been handed the task of investigating continued smuggling through select airports in the country (Reuters). Barclays said that smuggling may not slow down in the near term, as the Indian government chose to keep import restrictions unchanged in the recent fiscal budget. That said, restrictions could be eased later this year, but this is not likely until a concrete improvement in the current account deficit becomes evident. In China, demand, as proxied by trading volume on the Shanghai Gold Exchange, seems to be holding relatively steady with the rolling monthly average remaining stable."In our view, any future strength in physical demand will be unlikely to tame weakness elsewhere."

21 July 2014 - Price of Gold Today Surges on Malaysian Flight Crash News

The price of gold today (Thursday) skyrocketed when news of more geopolitical tension hit headlines. The safe-haven investment tends to see gains when fear arises.

Around 11:30 a.m. EDT, it was reported that a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in Torez, Ukraine this morning, about 25 miles from the Russian border.

Preliminary reports say the plane may have been shot down by Russia, or by Ukrainian separatists. Interfax-Ukraine quoted a Ukrainian official who said the plane disappeared from radar when it was flying at 33,000 feet (10,000 meters), according to The Telegraph. The plane carried 295 passengers.

National Journal reports that the separatists have denied responsibility.

"We do not have any idea what this is about and who shot down the plane. We're heading there now to investigate everything independently," pro-Russian Ukrainian rebel group Donetsk People's Republic's co-chair Tatyana Dvoryadkina said to Gazeta, a Russian newspaper.

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) commented to MSNBC with strong words. "If it is a result of either separatist or Russian actions mistakenly believing this was a Ukrainian war plane, I think there's gonna be hell to pay and there should be," McCain said.

The spot gold price shot up 1.3% at $1,316 an ounce. August gold futures gained $9 an ounce at $1,309.

"Some investors are buying gold as the Middle East region is very tense," R.J. O'Brien & Associates senior commodity broker Phil Streible said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg. "We have been seeing an increase in the safe-haven premium since the violence in Ukraine started."

Other geopolitical tensions are also sending the price of gold higher today.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama announced "significant and targeted" sanctions against Russia for its lackluster efforts in diffusing conflict in Ukraine. The same day, Ukraine accused the Russians of shooting down one of their attack planes. Additionally, Middle East tensions in Iraq, and between Gaza and Israel, are also driving up gold prices today.

21 July 2014 - Gold holds above $1,300 as geopolitical risks eyed

Posted: 21 Jul 2014 06:00 PM PDT

From:http://www.cnbc.com/id/101851418

Gold steadied above the $1,300 an ounce support level on Monday, aided by anticipation of increased geopolitical risks as the United States began demanding answers from Russia after a Malaysian plane was downed in eastern Ukraine.

Spot gold was little changed at $1,311.64 an ounce by 0302 GMT, after dropping 0.5 percent on Friday. Trading volumes were thin as Japanese markets were closed.

The metal jumped 1.4 percent on Thursday when news of the downed Malaysian plane that killed 298 people on board first came to light. But investors quickly banked profits the following day, causing bullion to fall 2 percent for the week, its first weekly drop in seven.

"Despite the slide in the last session, there is enough safe-haven demand to keep prices just above $1,300," said one trader in Singapore.

"There are no signs of tensions subsiding either over the Malaysian place incident or the Gaza strip, so gold will continue to see some safe-haven bids."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out what he called overwhelming evidence of Russian complicity in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 as international horror deepened over the fate of the victims' remains.

Anger is mounting over the plane incident. Australia's prime minister expressed deep concern that Russian-backed rebels remained in control of the crash site, saying the site looked more like a "garden clean-up" than a forensic investigation.

Meanwhile in the Middle East, Hamas's armed wing said on Sunday it had captured an Israeli soldier, as fighting in Gaza led to the bloodiest losses in a nearly two-week military offensive, with some 100 Palestinians and 13 Israeli soldiers killed.
